Foundation Program (FP)

Deepen your understanding and experience of Buddhism.

About FP

If you have been coming to classes regularly but feel you want to go a bit deeper with your study and practice, this may be a perfect next step for you.

The Foundation Program (FP) is an opportunity for people to engage in systematic study and meditation on the essential subjects of Kadampa Buddhism based on six books by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche.

The Stages of the Path to Enlightenment, based on the commentary Joyful Path of Good Fortune

Training the Mind, based on the commentaries Universal Compassion and The New Eight Steps to Happiness

The Heart Sutra, based on the commentary The New Heart of Wisdom

Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life, based on the commentary Meaningful to Behold

Types of Mind, based on the commentary How to Understand the Mind

FP Class Format

From 6.30 to 8.30pm on most Sundays, the session starts and concludes with chanted prayers (currently – Prayers for Meditation), includes recitation of the Condensed Meaning of the Text, a teaching and time for paired discussion.

Periodically (approximately every 4th class) we engage in a discussion class lead by two students on rotation. This is an opportunity to ask any questions and clarify our understanding of the section before we move on.

At the end of each study commitment, we sit a test to help us gauge our understanding and progress.

Resident Teacher, Gen Kelsang Lhachog teaches this program, and we are currently studying Joyful Path of Good Fortune.

FP is an enrolled program with a commitment to attend each class within a study section.

We offer a free trial so you can try a class before making a commitment.
