Study Programs

Deepen your understanding and experience of Buddhism

General Program

These are our Meditation & Buddhism classes that we offer throughout Sydney on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

General Program (GP) introduces basic Buddhist view, meditation, and practice suitable for everyone, regardless of their level of experience or background. It is a highly accessible program designed to address everyday problems with simple and practical advice that makes sense according to our daily experiences.

Everyone is welcome – you do not need to be a Buddhist to attend.

Foundation Program

If you have been coming to classes regularly but feel you want to go a bit deeper with your study and practice, this may be a perfect next step for you.

The Foundation Program (FP) is an opportunity for people to engage in systematic study and meditation on the essential subjects of Kadampa Buddhism based on six books by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche.

The Stages of the Path to Enlightenment, based on the commentary Joyful Path of Good Fortune

Training the Mind, based on the commentaries Universal Compassion and The New Eight Steps to Happiness

The Heart Sutra, based on the commentary The New Heart of Wisdom

Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life, based on the commentary Meaningful to Behold

Types of Mind, based on the commentary How to Understand the Mind

FP Class Format

From 6.30 to 8.30pm on most Sundays, the session starts and concludes with chanted prayers (currently – Prayers for Meditation), includes recitation of the Condensed Meaning of the Text, a teaching and time for paired discussion.

Periodically (approximately every 6th class) we engage in a discussion class lead by two students on rotation. This is an opportunity to ask any questions and clarify our understanding of the section before we move on.

At the end of each study commitment, we sit a test to help us gauge our understanding and progress.

Resident Teacher, Kelsang Jangsem teaches this program and we are currently studying Joyful Path of Good Fortune.

FP is an enrolled program with a commitment to attend each class within a study section.

We offer a free trial so you can try a class before making a commitment.

Teacher Training Program

The Teacher Training Program (TTP) provides a more extensive presentation of particular subjects of Mahayana Buddhism to enable practitioners to deepen their knowledge and experience of Buddhism, and to train as qualified New Kadampa Tradition Teachers.

The Program comprises twelve subjects, based on Buddha’s Sutra and Tantra teachings and the corresponding commentaries by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche.

The Teacher Training Program takes approximately twelve years to complete and requires an enrolment procedure.

Participants also need to observe certain commitments with regard to behaviour and way of life, and to complete a number of meditation retreats.

The first five subjects of the Program are the same as for the Foundation Program, and the additional subjects are:

Guide to the Middle Way, based on the commentary Ocean of Nectar

Vajrayana Mahamudra, based on the commentary Clear Light of Bliss

The Bodhisattva’s Moral Discipline, based on the commentary The Bodhisattva Vow

Offering to the Spiritual Guide, based on the commentaries Great Treasury of Merit and Mahamudra Tantra

Vajrayogini Tantra, based on the commentary The New Guide to Dakini Land

Grounds and Paths of Secret Mantra, based on the commentary Tantric Grounds and Paths

The Practice of Heruka Body Mandala, based on the commentary Essence of Vajrayana

Resident Teacher, Kelsang Jangsem teaches this program and we are currently studying The New Eight Steps to Happiness.
